Tryon Riding and Hunt Club Elects to Place the 77th Block House Steeplechase On Hiatus
After discussions with Block House Steeplechase stakeholders, the Tryon Riding and Hunt Club Board of Directors has reviewed its plans for the 2025 event. In light of significant financial and logistical challenges to hosting the race, the club believes a reassessment of how the Steeplechase is promoted and presented is warranted. As a result, TR&HC has elected to suspend the running of the Block House Steeplechase in 2025.
The Board plans to implement a thorough analysis to evaluate the possibility of bringing back the race at a future date. TR&HC president Angie Millon said, “We regret to announce the need to take this step, but as with all our decisions, we must do what is in the best long-term interest of the Club, the community, and the sport.”
TR&HC has proudly supported the Block House Steeplechase since its inception in 1947, and in recent years partnered with Tryon International Equestrian Center to host this treasured regional steeplechase. Millon explains, “The Blockhouse Steeplechase is an enormous undertaking, with broad marketing and complex operational requirements. Simply put, it demands tremendous oversight and focused execution, and those needs are expanding.” She also notes that despite the best efforts by all parties involved, the event has not generated the necessary returns to ensure its ongoing success.
TR&HC would like to thank our loyal race fans, volunteers, sponsors, and Tryon International Equestrian Center. It has been an honor and a privilege to host the Block House Steeplechase for the past 76 years.
